At first, the musical instruments caught my eye in this post about a young fella from western PA. It's a wonderful story. Made me think about our Row by Row Junior program, our commitment to kids, and the lifelong value of learning a skill. Perhaps you know a young person worthy of Mike Rowe's Work Ethic Scholarship. #rowbyrowjuniorShout Out to 2015 Work Ethic Scholarship Recipient, Jacen Schlott!
If you’re wondering why Jacen is posing with a guitar and tuba it’s because his love of music led to his career in construction. While traveling to football games with his high school band one of the chaperones took notice of Jacen’s work ethic. Mr. Lucci noticed that Jacen was always respectful, worked hard, had an eagerness to learn and always showed up on time. He offered Jacen a job at his cabinet shop and Jacen took it.
“I wasn’t cut out to be a doctor or a lawyer,” Jacen told me. “I had the grades for it, just not the desire.” It’s true. Jacen graduated in the top 7% of his high school class. He saw other kids go to college and graduate, only to struggle to find work in their fields of study. “Why do this,” said Jacen, “When I know I can find work in a trade pretty fast.”
In October of 2015 Jacen graduated from Triangle Tech, Pittsburgh with an Associate’s Degree in Specialized Technology in Carpentry and Construction Technology. His Work Ethic Scholarship paid for one third of the cost.
After graduation, Jacen received multiple job offers but he turned them all down and went back to work for the man that took notice of his work ethic in band – Mr. Lucci. Jacen still works for him today.
If you or someone you know would like to pursue a career in the skilled trades, go to mikeroweWORKS.org/scholarship. The application process begins Monday, April 2nd.

College basketball fans and PA quilting fans can both rejoice over this fabulous quilt spotted at another PA quilt show. This one was last fall at the PA National Quilt Extravaganza, Oaks (Philadelphia), PA. So timely with Pennsylvania’s Villanova once again in the NCAA Final Four. For Row by Row fans, it’s super cool because it took first place for “Interpretation of Theme.” Thousands of quilt shops across the US, Canada, and Europe will be interpreting our 2018 “Sew Musical” theme this summer. Can’t wait to see what they come up with. ... See MoreSee Less
Row by Row, thank you so much for the post about my quilt! I’m honored and humbled! I had a poster of it made to take to the Final Four to use at the send off parties. We’ll see if it is allowed in the stadium! I’m hoping to meet a lot of quilters and college basketball fans in San Antonio. Good luck to all the teams. I’m collecting shirts in anticipation of making another quilt. Go Villanova Wildcats!!!
Yes, t looks like a lot of energy went into that quilt.. savor your endeavors for a very long time....
Oh I don’t know about that! This quilt is precious. I have some of my old shirts in there and two of Jay Wright’s autographs. I think it will be mine for a while. Loans for events may be ok though.
Oh so beautiful! I am sure you will donate this to the University?
Go Leslie! Go Leslie! Go Nova! Go Nova!!
Well-deserved praise, Leslie!! It really is amazing.
💙 OMG I LOVE it!!! Wish I had it!! Beautiful on so many levels!!!! 💙
I want to acknowledge Carolyn Carlson Davis and Jamie Davis Loncaric, my friends and the wonderful long armers who quilted the basketballs all over the quilt! It wouldn’t be a quilt without you two!

Spotted this at the Lancaster AQS Show this week. Loved the blend of applique and patchwork. A common bit of feedback we get here in Row by Row is too much applique on the row patterns. But stats show the most popular rows collected are applique designs. This design style is a perfect mix of both. Absolutely love it! The quilt pattern is available from Northern Threads. They are one of our Row by Row shops in Fairbanks, Alaska. The actual name of the pattern is Northern Wilderness. The variety of traditional machine quilting is outstanding too. Hope you like seeing it! ... See MoreSee Less
Thanks for sharing my pattern. Wow, someone put Northern Wilderness in the AQS show, that’s amazing. I’m honored! Stay tuned, I have another new row by row inspired pattern coming out for summer that will top this one!
My favorite quilt at the show!!!
I saw this at the show. I didn't unfortunately study in detail. Afterwards my friend commented she took a few moments really looking at the quilt and noticed how many (all?) the quilt blocks on the separate blocks were linked to the scene/ Animal. Wished I'd known that and spent more time examining it. We both agreed after that wished that there was actual info at quilt shows on each quilt about how the design came about. Even referring to the quilt show program give no more than methods used and who pieced/ quilted it.
We like looking at appliqué blocks, but piecing blocks is easier!
Thank you I will be contacting them for this pattern. I just love it.
This an amazing pattern! Bought it in Skagway and I framed the individual blocks for the family.
I think it would be nice to see people take a little more time with the RXR quilts. Some people just slap them together to get the first finished prize. This is a great quilt!
I saw this at the show and loved it.. thought it looked like something I could do. Thanks for the info where to get the pattern!
Made this last year had a great time looking for all the different fabrics
I bought this pattern but haven't done it yet. It's on the list!!
I loved this quilt when I saw it. I loved the pieces blocks with the Applique. Great mix for sure.
That is wonderful!! Gorgeous quilt. Congratulations
yes it is stunning. But I agree with those who feel "too many applique" blocks in Row By Row.
Can't wait to see your new patternI love myNorthern Wilderness quilt.
Miss the AQS show in Lancaster now that I am living in IL.
Incredible quilt, great blend of both styles.
Wow. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Have visited Northern Threads. Fun shop.
Denice Mitman Elison-- You should try this!
That is very beautiful
This is beautiful!

Did any of you get to see this Red & White show in New York City back in 2011? I did. It was amazing and I feel myself so fortunate to have seen it in person. How about you?National Quilting Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in March and recognizes the skill, labor, and love quiltmakers pour into their work. This year, we're revisiting our 2011 exhibition Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts. The American Folk Art Museum dramatically transformed the Park Avenue Armory’s historic 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall with the installation of 650 red and white American quilts, all of which were on loan from the collection of Joanna S. Rose. It was the largest exhibition of quilts ever held in the city. Though the exhibition lasted only six days, it was captured in a fully-illustrated publication offering a history of red and white quilts, rare perspectives on the exhibition, and a pattern index. The book is available for purchase in our webshop at: bit.ly/2BnBlNw ... See MoreSee Less
